LCI-Liveable Centers Initiative

The City of Clarkston was selected by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) as one of eleven Metro Atlanta communities to receive funding through its Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) program for the 2014 fiscal year. The City was chosen to receive $80,000.00 of LCI Supplemental Study funding to update its original LCI plan.

The original plan was completed in 2004. Its goal was to attract private investors and developers within the city in order to serve both current and future citizens. Town Center revitalization and mixed-income housing were just a couple of the main objectives of this plan. Together, they would create an ideal environment that balanced life, work, and leisure activities.

Due to changes in the economy, it became necessary to update the original plan to reflect today’s market, and to provide a more realistic opportunity for success.

Clarkston consulted with a team led by Tunnell, Spangler, and Walsh (TSW) to manage the tasks leading to completion of the major LCI update. TSW, a locally-based firm specializing in land use planning, urban design, and landscape architecture, offered a proven track record of developing LCI studies for communities throughout the Atlanta region that have resulted in successful plan implementation.

Implementation

The Livable Centers Initiative Plan was completed and adopted by the City Council on April 7, 2015.

City Manager Keith Barker says, “Stakeholder involvement and input were key elements to the successful planning initiatives.” He also notes, “Over the past five year, we have been busy with multiple efforts aimed at boosting Clarkston’s image and economic viability. Stakeholder involvement has been very important with those other efforts, and the LCI update project is no different in that sense. We needed people who are vested in Clarkston and want to see the city grow to come forward and help us guide the city into the future.”
